Food, Travel Cabernet Grill—​Texas Wine Country Restaurant December 20, 2018

There’s something special about Fredricksburg, Texas, especially during the holiday season!

A little less than an hour drive from where we live in San Antonio, this historic place makes you feel like you stepped into your favorite Christmas storybook. So enchanting and magical. A few times a year we make our way to this quaint town in the Hill Country. Spending the weekend there is amazing, but even for just a day trip or dinner, I am always excited to visit. In November, we usually get to spend an entire weekend for the Fredericksburg Wine & Food festival since my hubby works for a winery, Llano Estacado. I’ll be sure to post more on that.

Fredericksburg might have the heart of a small town, but the array of restaurants and eateries provide a unique culinary experience. There are so many delicious spots I would recommend in a heartbeat, but by far Cabernet Grill is our favorite! This place offers a fine-dinning Texas Hill Country experience. The menu is masterfully created with seasonal and local inspirations by Chef Ross Burtwell and along with Wine Director, Elizabeth Rodriguez, they specialize in pairing the exquisitely prepared foods with the perfect wine.

Did you know Texas is the fifth-largest wine state in America? Cabernet Grill is located in the heart of the Texas Wine Country and offers the largest all-Texas wine list featuring more than 115 different Texas wines, including my hubby’s… Llano Estacado! #proudwife

Cabernet Grill was recently named one of “America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants for 2018” by Wine Enthusiast magazine, one of the only 7 Texas restaurants on the list. This prestigious award roster recognized restaurants nationwide that offer the most unique and dynamic wine-focused dinning experiences.

A couple days ago Brandon and I took our moms and my aunt, visiting from Mexico City. The restaurant was so cozy with the fireplace and Christmas decorations, perfect for a chilly December evening. Elizabeth and the whole staff make us feel right at home every time we visit. Their service is beyond excellent.

When in the Texas Wine Country… you drink Texas wine! We started off with a glass of Llano’s 1836 red wine. Is there anything better than wine by a fireplace?

A must-try when you visit Cabernet Grill is the Roasted Butternut Squash Soup. It has maple cayenne cream & crispy bacon. Honestly, it’s the best butternut squash soup I have ever tried. It’s so perfect for the holiday season. And how cute are the little pots they serve it in! Makes it taste even better.

This time I tried the Cajun Seasoned Snapper topped with crab meat. An amazing choice. I asked for the lemon butter on the side. You know…. trying to be healthy-ish and save some macros for dessert! Ha!

You get to pick a side for your entrée. Please make sure you try the Maple Chipotle Sweet Potato Mash. It’s like nothing you have ever tried before. A combo of sweet and savory with just the right kick from the chipotle.

My aunt got the Oak Smoked Pork Tenderloin topped with apples, cranberries, dates and roasted pecans, drizzled with a bourbon demi glace. I usually never order pork, but this was truly spectacular. I will definitely order it next time. The sweet potato hash and the Yukon Gold Smashed Potatoes are both excellent sides for this dish.

And of course…. my favorite part… dessert!! Elizabeth picked two desserts for us to share, the Granny Smith Smashed Apple Pie and the Sticky Pecan Cinnamon Bun Bread Pudding. I could have eaten a whole one… of each!

I can’t wait to go back. Every time we have dinner here I love it even more. If you have family in town for Christmas or just want to do something different during your holiday break, I would recommend you take a nice little road trip up to Frederciksburg, walk around town, enjoy the Christmas lights and finish the day with a amazing Texas Hill Country dinner!
